When Life Starts Making Love Inside You
The unknown, the void, and the bravery of letting something new come through you.
I’m sure many of you know or have heard of Dr. Joe Dispenza. He does incredible work around creating coherence between the mind and the heart so you can manifest the life you actually want. Three years ago I went to his week-long retreat, which I genuinely recommend, and I remember the exact moment he said something that branded itself into my body:
“Magic only happens in the unknown.”
“The best way to predict your future is to create it not from the known, but from the unknown. When you get uncomfortable in the place of the unknown, that’s where the magic happens.”
He talks about this constantly, and for good reason. Staying in the known keeps you looping in the familiar, recreating the same shit over and over because it’s tied to your past. Real change, real “mystical” or “magical” moments — the synchronicities, the serendipities, the holy-shit-did-that-just-happen experiences — only show up when you step out of the predictable and into the field of infinite possibilities. The quantum field.
It sounds delicious, doesn’t it?
But here’s the truth: most of us hate the unknown. We hate letting go of control. We hate the idea of another ego death. It feels like someone telling you you’re having cold broccoli for dinner. Again.
And that’s why most humans never experience magic.
The same goes for creativity. True creativity does not happen in the noise or in the familiar. It happens in the empty space, in the quiet, when you let yourself sit still long enough to drop into the void. Joe calls it the quantum field. I call it the place where life starts making love inside you. Where it impregnates you with creation so you can birth something that didn’t exist before. This love making sometimes goes on for a very long time gestating before it’s ready to come out into the world. Other times its a hot and heavy quickie and out pops your creative baby in no time. That’s the part we get to trust and allow ourselves to enjoy instead of endure.
More and more I feel creativity as masculine and feminine energy dancing together. It’s a flash of illumination followed by embodied action. It’s taking light and giving it form through your mind, your body, your soul. It’s being a conduit for something that wants to move through you even when you have no idea why.
That’s magic. That’s the sweet spot.
We forget something crucial, it cannot be forced: nature doesn’t create all the time. Not in the same way, not in the same season, not in every damn moment. Expecting yourself to be in constant creative output or constant manifestation mode is bullshit. That expectation is your ego whispering that you’re not enough unless you’re producing.
Life doesn’t want you creating nonstop. There are seasons for rest, for renewal, for death, for decay. These are part of creativity too.
And trust me, I get the resistance to surrendering to the creative process. Sometimes it means descending into your own personal hell and staying there long enough to feel what you’ve been avoiding. Look at Venus right now. Look at Inanna on her descent. She won’t rise again until February 17.
Maybe that’s the alchemical cycle you’re being asked to enter.
Magic happens on the inside before you ever see it outside. And even if you don’t give birth to it, or if the life span of your creation is short lived, it’s still magic, and the result has nothing to do with the creativity you experienced in the dark.
So take the plunge. These next couple of months are potent as hell for the final shedding of the Year of the Snake. Stop fighting with yourself and walk your fine little ass straight into the unknown.
And no, it doesn’t have to be dramatic. Maybe it means creating a daily practice you’ve never fully committed to and actually sticking with it. Maybe it means going back to therapy to talk about the thing you’ve buried for years. Maybe it means signing up for improv because you’re terrified of being rejected.
We all have places inside us that are unknown, places we’re curious about or scared shitless of. That’s the step I’m inviting you to take. Within yourself. For yourself.
For some of you, the unknown might look like doing less. Finding stillness every day. Getting into your body.
Whatever your version is, I highly recommend giving yourself the time — especially as winter settles in — to open yourself to the unknown and let yourself be found by magic.
